Pet Medical Insurance -

While we at Stream Valley are not pet insurance "experts," we can give you an idea of what is available.  Because procedures such as MRI's, radiation therapy, and reconstructive surgeries are now being offered as part of "routine" veterinary care, one way to manage the related costs is through an insurance plan.

There are different types of pet insurance policies to consider:

  • Traditional - You choose a specific plan and pay a monthly premium.  The company will reimburse you, generally between 50% and 90%, when your pet receives treatment.  These plans can cover accidents, illnesses, and sometimes preventive care, such as immunizations.
  • Customizable - Similar to Traditional, except you can choose the levels of coverage, and sometimes the actual services and treatments that are covered.
  • Accident Only - Like Traditional, except only accidents are covered.
  • Discount Plan - You pay a fee to have access to a network of veterinarians.  As long as your pet is treated at a veterinary practice on the list, your bill will be discounted by a set percentage.  The practice must participate in the insurance company's network.

There are other companies out there.  And there are quite a few things to consider before choosing a policy.  For example, will the company cover pre-existing conditions, such as hip dysplasia?  Will my coverage change as my pet ages?  Does the company offer multiple-pet discounts?
