Can Odie Live Organically?

Organic foods, raw diets, vegetarianism…these are all trends or lifestyles that many people are now choosing for their families—including their pets. We may base these decisions on moral, environmental, or general health concerns, yet it is important for us to seek the advice and “okay” of our family doctors before we make any such significant changes. Therefore, if you want your pets to join in your same routine, you should consult with their doctor as well.
With the advent of local natural and organic pet specialty shops, making this lifestyle change can be pretty easy. These stores often have knowledgeable staff who can help you address any dietary concerns you have. They can make recommendations on foods, treats, and often even toys and other products. Of course, you can do some internet research before you hit the stores as well.
But before you head out shopping, consult your veterinarian to make sure that you are acting in the best interests of your pet as well as of the environment, local economy, or whatever causes you support. For example, dogs and cats need a certain amount of protein in their diets, meaning that a strict vegan lifestyle might be difficult to adapt to. Or, your pet may have an allergy to a certain carbohydrate base, whether it is organically grown or not. A simple thirty-minute exam and discussion with the vet is often all you need to find appropriate protein substitutes, carb bases, or supplements for your pet.
Food is certainly a vital part of life, and we all want to make sure that we’re feeding our bodies in the best way possible. With new research, products, and alternatives available, we may choose to drastically change our diets, and we may see fantastic results. Just make sure that if your pets follow your lead in the diet department, then they follow through on their doctor visits and recommendations as well!
