·        American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals: The ASPCA was founded in 1866 as the first humane organization in the Western Hemisphere.  The Society was formed to alleviate the injustices animals faced then, and we continue to battle cruelty today.  Whether it’s saving a pet that has been accidentally poisoned, fighting to pass humane laws, rescuing animals from abuse, or sharing resources with shelters across the country, we work toward the day in which no animal will live in pain or fear.

·        HART—Homeless Animal Rescue Team: HART is a no-kill animal rescue/support group, incorporated in 1990, that takes in and fosters stray, abused, and unwanted dogs and cats.  Whether the animal is a give-up or a stray, HART works with local veterinarians, trainers, foster homes, and kennels to provide temporary care for the pet until s/he is placed in a loving, carefully-screened forever home.

·        House Rabbit Society: With local chapters throughout the U.S.—even in Canade and Italy—House Rabbit Society is a non-profit organization working to rescue rabbits in need and to educate owners about proper care.  See the website for behavior and health care information, to see adoptable rabbits, to donate to the organization, and for much more.

·        Humane Society of Loudoun County, Virginia: HSLC is a no-kill animal welfare organization founded in 1966 to rescue and rehabilitate abandoned, feral, and neglected animals from Loudoun County, Virginia.  Its mission is to provide companion animals with a second chance and to work toward a time when all companion animals have loving homes.  By visiting schools, retirement homes, and other public venues, we try to enrich people’s lives with the magic of animals’ unconditional love, and to teach humans the value of proper care and responsibility of beloved pets.

·        Humane Society of the United States: The HSUS is the nation’s largest animal protection organization with more than ten million members and constituents.  The HSUS is a mainstream voice for animals, with active programs in companion animals, wildlife and habitat protection, animals in research, and farm animals.  Our mission is to celebrate animals and confront cruelty.  The HSUS protects all animals through legislation, litigation, investigation, education, advocacy, and field work.  A non-profit organization, the HSUS celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2004, is based in Washington, D.C., and has regional representatives across the country.

·        Loudoun County Animal Services: A department of Loudoun County Government, Animal Services is dedicated to serve and protect the public’s health and safety and to assure the welfare of animals by promoting and providing for their safe, humane, and lawful treatment.

·        Morris Animal Foundation: MAF promotes animal health and welfare as well as advances in veterinary medicine.  MAF is the world’s largest non-profit 501(c)(3) foundation, dedicated to funding research studies to protect, treat, and cure animals, including both companion animals (dogs, cats, horses, llamas/alpacas), and wildlife (mountain gorillas, elephants, rhinoceroses, and wolves, along with many varieties of birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish).  More than 50 of the world’s most respected research institutions, colleges of veterinary medicine, and zoos are conducting nearly 200 MAF-sponsored studies and veterinary student projects.

·        The Wildlife Center of Virginia: Located in Waynesboro, Virginia, the Wildlife Center is “a hospital for native wildlife, teaching the world to care about and to care for wildlife and the environment.”  Virginia Living has featured the center in an article: “Mr. Dodo and the Rototiller.”
