Vaccine, Testing, and Preventative Protocols for Boarding and Daycare

While your pet is a day or overnight guest in the kennel at Stream Valley, our goal is to make sure that he or she stays healthy and happy during this stay.  For the safety of all our guests, we require that each pet is up-to-date on core vaccinations, testings, and preventatives for the duration of the visit.  Per the doctors' recommendation, some pets may be too ill or too young to have received all of these necessities, and we will take whatever precautions we can to prevent exposure.

Additionally, if your pet is new to our practice, whether he or she is up-to-date or not, we will perform a pre-boarding exam so that we can have baseline information on file.  This will assist us in watching for changes in demeanor, appetite, activity, etc., so that we are more likely to catch any problems before they become serious.

Should your pet's reservation extend beyond five (5) nights, we will require that he or she be bathed before go-home to further ensure his or her health and comfort.

We highly recommend that exams, vaccines, and testings be made and kept current before kennel drop-off, but we can and will perform an exam and provide treatments and services during a kennel stay as needed.  Should your pet need any updates during his or her stay, we will provide you with an estimate to review and sign, and we will be happy to answer any questions you may have at that time.

Our medical protocols are as follows:

Canine Vaccine, Testing, and Preventive Requirements:

Veterinary exam within the last 12 months
Current Vaccines--Rabies (1-year or 3-year vaccine, based on age and previous vaccination history)
Distemper (1-year or 3-year vaccine, based on age and previous vaccination history)
                            Bordetella (kennel cough; 6-month vaccine)
                            Canine Influenza (1-year vaccine)
Current Testing--Heartworm test (annually)
Fecal exam (intestinal parasite test; annually; current negative result)
Current Preventatives--Flea and tick prevention (generally given on a monthly basis)
Heartworm prevention (generally given on a monthly basis, may also offer protection against intestinal parasites)
**Strongly Recommended--Annual lyme vaccine and leptospirosis vaccine

Feline Vaccine, Testing, and Preventive Requirements:

Veterinary exam within the last 12 months
Current Vaccines--Rabies (1-year vaccine)
                            Distemper (1-year vaccine)
Current Testing--Fecal exam (intestinal parasite test; annually; current negative result)
For outdoor or indoor/outdoor cats - FIV/FELV test (annually)
For indoor only cats - one FIV/FELV test in medical history
Current Preventatives--Flea and tick prevention (generally given on a monthly basis)
**Strongly Recommended--regular heartworm preventative

Any pet who has received a Diagnostic Exam (for illness, injury, etc.) within 90 days of a boarding reservation is required to receive a Medical Progress Exam (which may or may not coincide with the boarding reservation).  This will ensure that any issues have either resolved or will be appropriately tracked while your pet is under our care.

Our kennel has also cared for rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, and other pocket or exotic pets.  For these pets, we require an annual veterinary exam and annual fecal (intestinal parasite, current negative result) testing.
