Obedience Training

Stream Valley Veterinary Hospital offers obedience training for dogs of all sizes and ages.  Your pet can work one-on-one during Doggie Daycare sessions with our kennel staff, or you can enroll in our Puppy Primer or Basic Obedience Classes!

Training classes are a wonderful way to build your relationship with you pet.  Did you know that the number one reason pets are relinquished to local shelters is behavioral issues?  With Deanna's positive reinforcement techniques, we can help you address basic behavioral problems, manners, and obedience to keep your dog a happy, well-adjusted member of your family.

Classes run once weekly for 4 or 6 weeks, depending on the curriculum.

For upcoming class schedules, check the information board in our lobby, watch for announcements here or on our Facebook page, email us at, or call our office at (703) 723-1017.  You can also give us a call to register for a class.  (Please note: we generally check our training email about once per week.)

Meet Our Trainer!

Deanna Scott is committed to using positive reinforcement training techniques. She started as a child, training her beagle mix to do all sorts of tricks for food. This was before treat training was a concept. She decided to go to a positive trainer with her first Border Collie. She and her first Border earned a Companion Dog (CD) title, before the dog was 15 months old. She ended up assisting the trainer and then began teaching classes on her own. She follows the teachings of Dr. Ian Dunbar and other positive reinforcement trainers. She stresses the importance of socializing your dog to other dogs, children, and adults. She teaches you how to train your dog to be a good house companion. She describes her training philosophy:

"I believe in setting your dog up for success and rewarding your dog for getting it right! Using positive training helps to increase the human-canine bond and makes for a pleasant experience for owner and dog. Give your dog love and respect, and you will receive love and respect back. Your dog is a part of your family. You try to give your family the best upbringing possible; now you can do the same for the canine members of your family."

Deanna got her first Border Collie in 1993 and her second in 1995. The second Border won "Wackiest Pet Trick" at PetSmart and was on PAX TV! She currently has two new Border Collies and one cat. She has been a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) Dulles Gateway Obedience Training Club (DGOTC), and the United States Border Collie Association (USBCA). She has been teaching classes for more than 20 years. She goes into the home for Puppy Jump-Start and Basic Behavior consultations. She has taught Puppy, Basic, Advanced Basic, Sub-Novice, Novice, Fun and Tricks, and Canine Good Citizen classes.
