American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals: The ASPCA was founded in 1866 as the first humane organization in the Western Hemisphere.  The Society was formed to alleviate the injustices animals faced then, and we continue to battle cruelty today.  Whether it's saving a pet that has been accidentally poisoned, fighting to pass humane laws, rescuing animals from abuse, or sharing resources with shelters across the country, we work toward the day in which no animal will live in pain or fear. 

America's VetDogs: "Mission: To help those who have served our country honorably live with dignity and independence...The Veteran's K-9 Corps is a...not-for-profit organization founded by the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind and serves the needs of disabled veterans and active duty personnel."  

Appalachian Trail Conservancy, Hiking with Dogs: Regulations, restrictions, trail ethics, and more information for sharing your Appalachian experiences with your canine friends. 

Blue Ridge Wildlife Center: "Our mission is to ensure the preservation of native wildlife in areas where development has destroyed habitat and endangered wildlife.  We rescue, provide veterinary care, and rehabilitate injured, orphaned, and sick native wildlife with the goal of releasing them back into the wild.  We monitor and control wildlife disease and environmental toxins, and we teach others the importance of preserving native wildlife species."

Guide Dog Foundation: "Since 1946, the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind, Inc. has provided guide dogs free of charge to blind people who seek enhanced mobility and independence." 

HART--Homeless Animal Rescue Team: HART is a no-kill animal rescue/support group, incorporated in 1990, that takes in and fosters stray, abused, and unwanted dogs and cats.  Whether the animal is a give-up or a stray, HART works with local veterinarians, trainers, foster homes, and kennels to provide temporary care for the pet until s/he is placed in a loving, carefully-screened forever home.

House Rabbit Society: With local chapters throughout the U.S., even in Canada and Italy, House Rabbit Society is a non-profit organization working to rescue rabbits in need and to educate owners about proper care.  See the website for behavior and health care information, to see adoptable rabbits, to donate to the organization, and for much more.

Humane Society of Loudoun County, Virginia: HSLC is a no-kill animal welfare organization founded in 1966 to rescue and rehabilitate abandoned, feral, and neglected animals from Loudoun County, Virginia.  Its mission is to provide companion animals with a second chance and to work toward a time when all companion animals have loving homes.  By visiting schools, retirement homes, and other public venues, we try to enrich people's lives with the magic of animals' unconditional love, and to teach humans the value of proper care and responsibility of beloved pets.

Humane Society of the United States: The HSUS is the nation's largest animal protection organization with more than ten million members and constituents.  The HSUS is a mainstream voice for animals, with active programs in companion animals, wildlife and habitat protection, animals in research, and farm animals.  Our mission is to celebrate animals and confront cruelty.  The HSUS protects all animals through legislation, litigation, investigation, education, advocacy, and field work.  A non-profit organization, the HSUS celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2004, is based in Washington, D.C., and has regional representatives across the country.

Loudoun County Animal Services: A department of Loudoun County Government, Animal Services is dedicated to serve and protect the public's health and safety and to assure the welfare of animals by promoting and providing for their safe, humane, and lawful treatment.

Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy: A volunteer organization promoting "the preservation and proliferation of healthy wildlife habitats throughout Loudoun County by fostering an understanding of the value of nature and providing opportunities for applying that knowledge to the betterment of the natural environment."  Stream Valley is a corporate sponsor of the LWC!  

Morris Animal Foundation: A non profit organization that "helps animals enjoy longer, healthier lives."  The Foundation works to "advance health and welfare research that protects, treats and cures companion animals, horses and wildlife worldwide."

The Wildlife Center of Virginia: Located in Waynesboro, Virginia, the Wildlife Center is "a hospital for native wildlife, teaching the world to care about and to care for wildlife and the environment."  Virginia Living has featured the center in an article: "Mr. Dodo and the Rototiller."

The Yellow Dog Project: "If you see a dog with a YELLOW RIBBON or something yellow on the leash, this is a dog who needs some space.  Please do not approach this dog with your dog.  Please maintain distance or give this dog and his/her person time to move out of your way."
