Cat Dental Disease: Signs, Treatment, and Prevention

Dental disease is one of the most common health issues we see in cats. The good news: with early detection and routine care, most cats can stay comfortable and keep their teeth longer.

Common signs of dental disease in cats

• Bad breath (halitosis)

• Red or bleeding gums

• Drooling or pawing at the mouth

• Difficulty chewing or dropping food

• Decreased appetite or weight loss

• Yellow/brown tartar buildup

• Behavior changes (hiding, irritability)

What causes it?

Plaque hardens into tartar, which irritates the gums and allows bacteria to move below the gumline. Over time, this can lead to gingivitis, periodontal disease, tooth loss, and pain.

How we diagnose and treat cat dental disease

A full oral exam is the first step. Many cats need dental X-rays to evaluate tooth roots and bone health. Treatment may include a professional dental cleaning, polishing, and—when needed—safe extractions of painful or infected teeth.

How to prevent dental disease

• Schedule routine wellness exams so we can check the mouth early

• Ask about professional dental cleanings when tartar is present

• Use vet-approved dental diets, treats, or water additives

• Brush at home if your cat tolerates it (we can show you how)

When to call us

If you notice bad breath, gum redness, drooling, or changes in eating, it’s worth an exam. Dental pain can be subtle in cats.
